Steven Delport was born in Pretoria, South Arica, in May 1978 and from a very young age exhibited a keen interest in artistic practice, hence he took art as a subject and specialised in ceramics. After matriculation in 1996, he took two years travelling, doing odd jobs, amongst other making and selling various craft objects, and studying photography. In 1998 he completed a graphic design course at Afrigraphix School of Design and Photography. In 1999 Delport commenced in the study of Fine Art at the Technikon Pretoria (today known as Tshwane University of Technology), majored in sculpture and painting and consequently received his National Diploma in Fine Arts 2002.
By day, Delport works for DSW sculpture studio and foundry specialising in the patina of bronze sculptures.
After hours are dedicated to painting, sculpture street art and bonsai. His most recent body of work explores Africa, as Delport’s feels a fervent connection with the continent’s people, geography, its mystery and natural splendour. Delport, in his own words, explains that he is; “searching for a better understanding of this battered, bludgeoned untamed beast that he calls home”.
